Yes. GoFiChat talks phone to phone over Bluetooth Low Energy, and over local Wi-Fi when you share a network or hotspot. Airplane mode is fine as long as Bluetooth is switched back on.
Bluetooth usually reaches 10–30 metres depending on walls, bodies and the phones involved. Everyone connects to the host's phone, so stay reasonably close to whoever started the room. If someone drifts out of range, GoFiChat reconnects them when they come back.
Yes. Both connect over standard Bluetooth Low Energy, so mixed groups work.
Each connection uses X25519 key exchange and ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption, with keys created on the phones for that room only. There are no accounts and no servers in the loop, so there's nothing for us to see or store. Scanning the QR code also pins the host's key, which protects against anyone pretending to be the room.
Bluetooth Low Energy is designed to be frugal. Live games like air hockey use more because the screen and radio stay busy, but a normal chat uses very little.
The host's phone runs the room, so the room closes when they leave. Anyone can start a new one in a couple of taps.
